Vaccination protocols should begin at 6 weeks of age, as this is when the immunity transferred by the mother during pregnancy starts to decline, making kittens and puppies more susceptible to contracting viral or bacterial diseases that can be very harmful to their health.

The programmes recommended by veterinarians aim to address immunisation early on, ensuring a healthy life for your pet.

Recommended Age for Dogs and Diseases to Prevent

For dogs, the internationally recommended protocol starts at 6-8 weeks of age, with the first vaccination against canine parvovirus type 2. This is followed by two booster shots until 16 weeks of age.

The next two shots introduce new agents to immunise the animal against other viruses and bacteria that frequently cause illness in dogs (canine adenovirus types 1 and 2, distemper, canine parainfluenza, canine coronavirus, parvovirus, and leptospirosis).

After these three vaccinations, in Portugal, it is mandatory to administer the rabies vaccine after the age of 12 weeks. Its booster will depend on the vaccine manufacturer's instructions and may vary between one and three years.

Once the essential and mandatory vaccinations are done, depending on the geographical location, population density, and recommendations from the veterinarian, your dog's vaccination plan may also include vaccines for kennel cough (Bordetella bronchiseptica) and leishmaniasis (Leishmania infantumBordetella bronchiseptica) e leishmaniose (Leishmania infantum).

Recommended Age for Cats and Diseases to Prevent

The vaccination protocol for kittens should also start at 6-8 weeks of age, with the first vaccination for feline parvovirus, herpesvirus, and calicivirus. This is followed by two booster shots until 16 weeks of age.

After three vaccinations, the rabies vaccine for cats in Portugal is recommended for animals travelling to rabies-endemic areas or those with outdoor access, though it is not mandatory like it is for dogs. Its booster will depend on the vaccine manufacturer's instructions, and may vary between one and three years.

Along with the initial protocol, depending on the geographical location, population density, and veterinarian recommendations, your cat's vaccination plan may include vaccines for feline leukaemia (FelV), Chlamydia felis and Bordetella bronchiseptica. Bordetella bronchiseptica.
